Back into the Swing of Things

How things change in just a couple of months! I’ve been off from my regular job for six weeks and I decided to take off that time from the website as well. However, that time is drawing with a close and I couldn’t wait any longer.

We have a new addition to our family. David was born on April 10th. He has all his fingers and toes and has a healthy set of lungs! I’ve had such an awesome time getting to know my new son…

I spent quite a bit of time in the yard with my dad cleaning out brush. It was a lot of work but it was definitely worth it. Side benefit: I lost a few pounds! Lol

No more brush

15 car loads later - no more overgrowth! Sorry - no "before" pics.

We signed up for netflix for a little extra entertainment while off. We got in to X-files and Allison watched every episode of Hoarders. This brought up another topic… Cleaning the house! We purged a bunch of stuff from the house. We took a several bags of clothes and some boxes of doodads to the consignment shop. The big benefit is simply getting rid of junk. However, we also made an extra $30 bucks. (Including recycling some cans).

It’s so nice to have the house cleaned out. It looks really good. Laughingly, I am more satisfied with how the garage looks after a cleaning! Four trashcans later, I have a work shop again. It will be a lot easier to finish my various projects now that I can actually get to them!

There is actually room in here to work on projects again!

I’ll be updating the website regularly once again. Some existing stuff will be updated and we’ll be adding some new things as well.

Teaming With Microbes

What an interesting book! Allison read Teaming with Microbes about a year ago, and I finally got around to reading it. Now to be perfectly honest, there is a bit of chemistry and some biology that is just a bit over my head. However, I’ll be reading it again and I’m sure it will sink in the second time around. The overriding principals are easy enough.

Soil is alive! It’s filled with all kinds of life that balance out everything in the “soil food web.” Many of these creatures directly effect how our gardens grow. Unfortunately most of the actions we gardeners take have a detrimental impact on these tiny creatures. The book explains at length the various characters performing in the soil, and why they are beneficial. The author also works to explain how we can care for these critters and keep the soil healthy. Much evidence is presented showing that actions like tilling or spraying chemicals do much more harm than good.

There are some amazing concepts in this book, and they make perfect sense once you stop and think about them. Who knew how extremely important bacteria and fungi are to your tomatoes? The authors also present 19 “soil food web gardening rules” to follow if one wants a sustainable and healthy garden.

I will admit that a bit of the science made my eyes glass over, even though I found the book fascinating. Regardless the writers still got their points across, in spite of my lacking comprehension. I would certainly encourage every gardener to read this book. I will be reading it again; this book has earned a permanent spot on our book shelf.

On the last note: Compost tea is certainly not a new idea however this book made the subject exciting. I can’t wait to brew up some compost tea and see the benefits in my garden!

Are Your Hens Laying?

It’s important to know whether or not your hens are laying. Feeding non-productive birds is expensive and not something we plan on doing. A chicken typically lives around 8 years, although they can live much longer. The number of eggs a hen lays will decrease each year.

Barred Rock Hen

Barred Rock Hen

Here’s one of our Barred Rock Hens. We got her last summer, so she should still be laying well. To check for laying, we look at her vent.

Her vent is moist and open, not tight. She has probably laid an egg in the past day or so.

This is our Buff Orpington hen. She was our first hen; she’s 3 years old this summer. I’m fairly certain she is still laying, too:

If she weren’t laying, her vent would be more closed than this.

If you want to examine your chickens, wait until they are roosting in the evening. It’s a lot easier to catch them. Also, check in the spring or summer, once egg-laying is in full swing. We let our chickens go through their natural “rest” period in the winter; their vents will be more closed during this time.

Broadadand

This picture has nothing to do with anything other than i found the subject matter amusing. I saw one of these Time Warner Cable vans months ago and was unable to capture proof, but my day has come! I want to know: is this the only van with like this or are there a bunch of them out there?

What exactly is Broadadand? Can I bundle it with my other services? Do I have to sign a contract?

Blazing fast Broadadand!
